"Cyberspace. A consensual hallucination experienced daily by billions of legitimate operators, in every nation, by children being taught mathematical concepts... A graphic representation of data abstracted from banks of every computer in the human system. Unthinkable complexity. Lines of light ranged in the nonspace of the mind, clusters and constellations of data. Like city lights, receding..." - William Gibson.

You ready to punch deck, space cowboy?

Cyberspace in SamsaraMOO is based on the Matrix from the William Gibson novels, not the shitty Keanu Reeves movies. If you're unfamiliar with the novels, imagine the movie Hackers, or the game Uplink, for a different reference.

There are a few VERY IMPORTANT things to remember:

  1. When you're jacked in, your body will be helpless in the real world.
  2. See above.

What you will need

  1. An Alkatek DNI
  2. Any Cyberdeck
  3. An access point/station
  4. A safe room to conduct your business

Navigating Cyberspace and Managing Files

When you jack into your deck jack in deck, the first thing you're greeted with is your deck's Login Node.

A Node in cyberspace is like a room in the real world. You should also be greeted with a list of Links. A link is like a door or exit in the real world, but instead of having a direction, they have a number.

To check the links in a room, type links. This is a lot like the look command in the real world.

You navigate by simply typing the number of the link you wish to travel to. Let's check out your Control Node, shall we?

Inside your control node is your Storage Node, and a link back to the Login Node. Your storage node is where any programs or other data that you may have downloaded will be stored. Let's go there.

Your Storage Node is a Datavault, or Vault for short. You can use the command vaults to see which other vaults, if any, you currently have access to. The command pwd #, where # is the number of a vault, this will let you change your currently selected vault. Any files you copy will automatically go to your currently selected vault.

You can use the command files in a node to see what files are there. The command copy #, where # is a file number, this will copy that file. You'll see a progress bar and will be notified when it's done. If you leave before the file is done downloading, it will automatically abort.

You can delete files from your currently selected vault with the del # command.

While navigating around cyberspace, you may come across other console cowboys in a node. The commands say and emotes all work as normal. There is no combat (yet), but you can look at other people in the matrix to see what they have set their avatar as. You can set your own avatar with seticon <desc>. You can also access Chatnet, Zotnet, etc. as normal from inside cyberspace.

Running programs

If you want to see a list of programs in your currently selected datavault, you can use the command progs. To run one, use run #.

To see a list of programs you are currently running, use ps. To stop one of those programs, use halt #.

You can only run a certain amount of programs at one time - each program takes up memory, and when you have no more memory, you'll have to halt a program before you can run another.

Brains

Gym brains. Locate wikipedia on the internet and gym your brains. It's much easier than going to WOPR.

Summary of usage

  • Nodes are like rooms, links are like doors.
  • Use look, links, and files to see what's in the node you're in.
  • Use vaults to see what vaults are available.
  • Use pwd to see what vault you have selected, or pwd # to change vaults.
  • Check your available programs with progs, run them with run #, check your running programs with ps, end them with halt #.
  • Use ex here if you get confused... or, just jack out to get out of cyberspace.
